The Grand Theatre La Fenice

It is said that the Grand Theatre La Fenice is not just a symbol of rebirth, but also the keeper of an ancient curse.

The legend tells that, in the eighteenth century, a Venetian nobleman lost everything at the gaming tables during a Carnival night, including the money for the construction of the grand theatre. Blinded by rage, he uttered a curse: “May this theatre always know fire, and from its ashes may it never find peace.”

Years later, in 1836, a fire destroyed La Fenice for the first time. The Venetians wept, yet they rebuilt it more splendid than before. Then, in 1996, another blaze consumed it once again. Two devastating fires, each followed by rebirth.

Some swear that, on silent nights, when the lagoon lies still and the theatre stands empty, a faint crackling can be heard among the red velvet and golden chandeliers. It is not the wood settling, say the oldest stagehands, but the breath of the curse.

And yet La Fenice, true to its name, continues to rise again. Perhaps the curse is not a condemnation, but a destiny: to burn, to fall, and to return each time more radiant than before.
